The biggest surprise for me at CMJ 2012 was the North Carolina alt-country band Mount Moriah. I found myself completely hypnotized as the band leaned only on talent and truth...acting as the perfect knife to cut through the large amount of fake hype that surrounded the festival.
Mount Moriah gives us their first sample from their upcoming album, Miracle Temple, in the form of a glider of a song with "Younger Days". Coasting usually has a negative connotation, but with "Younger Days" the gliding pace soothes and shows that flash doesn't have to drive music, an easy pace can do the trick as well. The truth I mentioned earlier pops out on "Younger Days" in the form of subtle, yet powerful lyrics. The lyrics are filled with want and usually phrased in questions bookended by observation. Going back in forth between the want and the response results in a song that immediately hits its groove, locks in, and acts as a reminder to listeners that music with a country lean can still be relevant in a world of laptops, buzz, and shiny distractions.
