A Letter to Kanye West
Dear Mr. West,
Recently in an interview you said, "I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice. It's me settling into that position of just really accepting that it's one thing to say you want to do it and it's another thing to really end up being like Michael Jordan." I’m not sure how you can be considered the voice of our generation if you are nothing more than a translator. You take the creative voices of Daft Punk, Peter Bjron & John, Elton John, Steely Dan, Michael Jackson, and many many more. You are the new Puff Daddy and nothing more. I would like to say before I go any further that you are a great addition to the world of music, your stuff is generally great and I’m glad so many people love it. With that said, to place yourself at the top is nothing more than a joke. The great artists that occupy our world create from scratch and labor over a point of view that to them needs to get out there. This might be harsh, but you’re a pretty big hack. Now, now, hear me out…I have proof. At the European Music Video awards you stormed the stage and claimed that it is impossible that Justice’s video could be better than your over the top piece of shit. Well, it was. That is neither here nor there. The point, the reason why you are a hack, is you translated that loss into the notion that you should just basically rip off that video for “The Good Life”. You can’t deny this, since you went out and hired the three directors that created the “D.A.N.C.E” video. I’ve heard the new tracks and they are nothing more than T-Pain recreations…which for the life of me I don’t know who would want to listen to that. In the end, I really wish you would just appreciate that millions of people love you and your music…isn’t that enough? To self-appoint yourself as the voice of our generation just shows how far you are from reality. Please, pull your head out of you ass and create something that is truly lasting…then the people will award you with the very high honor you give yourself,

ReplyDeleteWhat really sucks is that when College Dropout came out, it was truly original. I remember listening to it and thinking "Thank God, something worth listening to". Since then, he's become everything that he'd seemed to have been against.He is still very creative and involves the right people (Murakami's influence was great), but he's all ego anymore and he might well be right...he DOES epitomize this generation of hip hop excess ("coke and birds") and baseless gloating and that is not a good thing...if he wants to be timeless, he needs to do more than rep what he has
