Track Of The Day: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - "Nightwater Girlfriend"

If Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin taught us anything with their wonderful collection of unreleased demos on the 2011 release Tape Club, it's that they're a band obsessed with a multitude of sounds, all of which pack some sort of emotion. That's exactly what we get with their newest offering, "Nightwater Girlfriend."  The song bounces open with hand claps and a sugary guitar that hints to 90s pop rock, only to have a heavy guitar break expectation and deliver see-sawing layers of happy emotions.

It's an extremely playful and exciting track, and one that can be consumed purely for its catchiness.  A few close listens in, and you'll think of it as a catapult joyride through every state of emotional music.  The pop to rock opening structure gives way to a disco breakdown and eventually closes with an acoustic guitar folk section, all of it glued together with consistent 90s emotive vocals.  This is a hard track to pull off or even conceive, but for SSLYBY, it's a standard journey into flipping expectations and continuing on the path they started way back in 2004: being open to all musical paths.
