WLFY SXSW 2012 Secret Show (Recap)

About six months ago I started thinking about how to throw a unique SXSW showcase that would squarely place all attention on the music and give adventurous music fans an experience unlike any other. In order to accomplish this, I decided several guidelines would have to be in place.  First, to fend off the buzz related nature of the festival that none of the bands/artists would be announced.  This gives the unknown bands we champion and the acts that have a huge following the same value.  Secondly, no signage or sponsors would be allowed, to act as reminder that such shows can exist at SXSW and once again, all focus placed on the music only.  Third, only 100 RSVPs would be allowed to know the location ahead of time, to keep the show intimate, which is how I like to experience music.

The accolades should go to the bands/artists who took a chance on playing such an unproven showcase idea and the music fans who, with no information, showed up.  They had no idea who was playing, had to wake up at 10am, and reminded me that people still care about taking chances when it comes to musical discovery.  While I love the frantic and packed nature of SXSW, this showcase acted as a flip side to the whole festival and will go down as one of my favorite shows we've ever been part of.  We will definitely make this an annual secret show at SXSW, so be on the look out next year for the RSVP details.

If you missed it, the guys at Backseat Sandbar were nice enough to shoot a bunch of video.  Enjoy:
