For the past five years, we've been missing something important: Tara Jane O'Neil solo material. The former Louisvillian and ex-Rodan member has crafted some of the most challenging, intuitive, and mesmerizing albums since the turn of the millennium. She will return early next year with Where New Light Shines via Kranky. The first taste of the record is "Wordless in the Woods," a song which sounds much like its title with O'Neil's lilting voice seemingly piped in from great heights as the music buzzes around, shimmering like light off water. O'Neil's work is gaining that elemental quality that is sort of like musical haiku -- minimal yet unrestrained, evocative and unsteady at the same time.
