I know when we make up these year end lists that, like judging all art, no pick can be deemed wrong…it’s just an opinion, right? We’ll it’s my opinion that these are the three worst lists concerning the top albums of 2008.
3.) Letter’s Home From Camp (Mark)
Grabbing the top spot is sex on fire screw up’s, Kings of Leon. Ok, sure, maybe it's an album that hit Mark emotionally. Then Death Cab at two, MGMT in third, and Flight of the Conchords (7), Kanye (8), Ting Tings (9), and Vampire Weekend (10). Is this a best of 08 or the top artists overplayed on indie radio stations? I look at some lists with one or two of these overrated albums and understand because we all have our guilty pleasures…but this list has a sweet tooth for sugary pop/rock/rap posing as good music.
2.) Pretty Much Amazing
I’m going to get killed for this one because the site has a massive amount of readers…but we don’t so I can be as honest as I want. This list is confusing and embarrassing. It’s confusing because instead of numbering or just saying here…these are my favorites, PMA breaks up their list into the categories: Big Albums x Big Names, Newcomers, and Eye Openers. I’m not sure how Newcomers and Eye Openers differ or if the albums he lists under Big Albums x Big Names are only the best albums vs those that fit that category…I really don’t care. In the end PMA’s list includes The Killers, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, The Ting Tings, Santogold, Lil Wayne, Kanye, Death Cab…and my two favorites Coldplay and Britney Spears. Why do people trust this blog when it comes to informing them of music. Maybe I just misunderstood the complexity of Viva La Vida.
1.) The Independent Ear
This list makes all other bad lists look like the bible of indie music. Here we go. Top three in descending order: Santogold, Vampire Weekend, and…wait for it…hold….wait for it…WEEZER, THE RED ALBUM! Yes. Case closed. I will just paste the post and let's all go get some drinks and toast to my favorite bad list of the year. (pay close attention to the Nirvana comparison please)
Weezer's best album since Pinkerton. For those who felt the lyrics were too simplistic, keep in mind we're living in a different Rivers Cuomo-world. You can't be writing songs about teenage Japanese girls after you've conquered the galaxy. Instead, you share the microphone with your bandmates (who wrote some solid songs in the process), take a dig at critics any chance you get, and throw any and all self-consciousness out of the window. If people thought Pinkerton was Weezer's most honest album, the Red Album has to be considered their most fearless. How else do you explain the epic-ness of "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived," the rap-rock of "Dangerous," and "Heart Songs," a tune that simultaneously shouts out Nirvana, The Fresh Prince, Iron Maiden, and Debbie Gibson?
For anyone who thinks that my list is wrong or mean…by no means is this fact…it’s just my opinion of other’s bad opinions.

Mean, yes...Hilarious, yes.
You really don't like Vampire Weekend or Kanye do you? Oh well, I agree that these three lists aren't that good.
Weezer? Wow.
asshole. if you read that blog (i'm pretty sure you just found it via elbo.ws or something), then you'd know why Luis didn't number his list.

PMA's list was extremely well rounded. Don't be such a bigot.
Again: its readers know why it wasn't numbered. and everyone who reads PMA knows and loves or, because of Luis, fell in love with pop music again.
I do read Pretty Much Amazing and really like the blog. He gives a justification for not numbering in the post...but I'm arguing that putting top albums into confusing categories is not my cup of tea. His list is not wrong, it can't be, however, I'm allowed to say I didn't like the format and inclusion of coldplay/spears.
I've never heard of your blog. I got here via PMA lol-ing at your post.
here via Luis loling too...
but by looking at some of the posts here, it seems you guys are some kind of Pitchfork clone.
Whatever, this was an interesting post for a boring Sunday.
learn how to spell & then maybe i'll take your list seriously
I'm all for free speech and everyone having their own opinion... but this post is just mean and rude. If you do like PMA and read it often, you should have the decency to respectfully disagree with his selections (as I'm sure many have) and not go on this spiteful rant.
Your "review" of The Independent Ear's list is also grossly unflattering.
I think this list is kind of funny...not sure why so many people are upset.
i got here via PMA too (i just recently started reading that site)....and i have to say i totally agree with you on it. blogs should be about unfiltered opinions...if people can't handle it...go write for spin.
keep up the good work. hilarious. i had been meaning to unsubscribe to PMA ever since that list anyways.
I liked this post. Too bad people take this personally instead of viewing it as opinion.
Haha pretentious much?
What makes PMA such a great blog is that they refuse to like/dislike music because they are SUPPOSED to. They bridge the gap between mainstream music and indie music better than any other site on the net (Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, The Dodos, TV On the Radio, Frightened Rabbit, MGMT, Wolf Parade all find their way onto some list on the site- and on yours).
But it's not a big deal- you're entitled to your opinion. Just realize that other people are entitled to theirs as well.
In defense of the Independent Ear, he specifies that "c'mon, I'm one man, who am I to say if these are the best albums of 2008?" he's just enumerating his favorites. The Red Album def didn't touchdown anywhere near mine, but what's the point of attacking someone's personal favorites unless you're TRYING HARD to be pretentious.
PS. Luis you the bomb - PMA is the shiz.
you guys put lil wayne & mgmt along with a few others that PMA had as one of the anonymous's wrote. & coldplay's album blew, i agree with you. however if you look at the other blogger's best of's on PMA (randi & adam), you'll notice other tastes. plus luis mainly runs a pop-mainstream blog, so what did you expect?
Your opinion officially doesn't count, because you apparently can't spell Santogold correctly.
And I didn't even really like PMA's list this year.
